IHRR is looking for a highly motivated and focused individual willing to build a career in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management-related Research and Interventions. The position entails proper documentation of DRR related programs and research, communication with project partners and clients. Deep interest and proven experience in project documentation, proposals and report writing and a strong understanding of scientific interventions in DRR are highly valued.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate in proper documentation of project documents: proposals, reports, etc. 

  • Idea conceptualization and development of DRR related research project concept notes and proposals in close collaboration with the CEO and thematic advisors.

  • Prepare project methodologies and coordinate all project activities as per the consultation with the project lead.

  • Support development of presentations and training materials specifically for DRR related activities.

  • Coordinate data collection activities both secondary and field-based primary data collection as per the needs of the projects and initiatives. 

  • Document all activities, events, publications related to IHRR and pass it over to the communication team to maintain a proper digital record on the IHRR website, social media, etc. 

  • Handle communications with project partners and clients as needed.

 

Requirements & Skills

  • Excellent verbal, documentation, proposal writing, and presentation skills (English & Nepali).

  • Listens to others, correctly interprets messages from others, and responds appropriately.

  • Excellent proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and Power-Point.

Job purpose

Under the direct supervision of the line manager, the Intern will assist in the research and program implementation initiatives. Perform a range of administrative and office support activities for the efficient operation of the organization.

Roles and Responsibilities

Program support

  • Support to line manager in the implementation of activities related to health and disaster risk reduction;

  • Support research on topics relevant to IHRR’s health and DRR program;

  • Support for project documentation, report, and other required correspondence;

  • Support in putting place a disaster health data management system: data collection and analysis.

  • Take an initiation on blog writing, translate data into infographic, and summary formats.

Administrative Support

  • Provide logistical support on activities such as organization and reporting of conferences, webinars, events, training courses, etc.

  • Administrative support for efficient program implementation.

  • Support on periodic events such as quarterly reviews, workshops, and other administrative support.

 

Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in a related area of public health/nursing/disaster management or equivalent (freshers are encouraged to apply).

 

Skills

  • Experience in research or community-level development or emergency work.

  • Knowledge and experience in community mobilization tools and techniques.

  • Strong writing skills and ability to synthesize information into a clear summary.

  • Ability to communicate clearly verbally and in writing to a diverse range of actors.

  • Working competence in spoken and written Nepali and English.

  • Assist the program officer to pilot and manage Technologies in DRR related activities not limited to the use of open data, GIS, Drones, Virtual reality in different DRR preparedness and management-related initiatives. 

  • Carry out GIS mapping (particularly risk, hazard, and vulnerability mapping) at a local level integrating data from several heterogeneous sources.

  • Assist the project team in designing training materials and organizing different DRR related training and capacity-building exercises.

  • Contribute to the handling and managing of Open Source Data Inventory of IHRR.

  • Closely work with the technology development team in translating the project requirements into a technical document that is easily understandable for the technical team. 

  • Proper documentation and data management for all activities and projects where they are engaged/involved.

  • Involve in data collection activities both secondary and field-based primary data collection as per the needs of the project. 

  • Stay updated with DRR related plans and policies, new innovative initiatives, and frontier technologies on DRR related interventions.


 

Requirements:

Technical Requirements

Admin & Finance Officer will be fully responsible for leading overall administrative and financial-related tasks. The AFO will be based in Jhamsikhel, Lalitpur District.

Terms of reference (ToR) of Admin & Finance Officer

  • Maintain record of overall expenditure of the program activities in accordance the direction of program unit

  • Prepare report and ensure the financial transactions, payments and procurements held as per organization policy and government regulations

  • Submit financial and admin report to Program coordinator/ donors on accounting principles, entry of vouchers and production of required financial reports and statements.

  • Assist the organization and management of internal and external audits

  • Ensure, develop & maintain income goods, equipment, material and their posting into the proper ledger.

  • Calculate the taxes on applicable deducted sources, deposit in timely to concerned office and maintain E-TDS system

  • Maintain proper filing and effective documentation of all documents related to finance and administration.

  • Facilitate to release advance to the program staff implementation at district and Palika level.

  • Receive, verify and ensure that supporting documents are submitted by program staffs while settling advance.

  • Check and ensure attendance, payment and other necessary supporting documents required for settlement.

  • Provide orientation to the new project staff on financial norms and policy of the project.

  • Prepare and submit qualitative and quantitative financial report.

  • Maintain office conditions, ensure the good environment and smooth running office and timely operations 

  • Perform any other duties as required or requested by line manager and the board.

Qualification & Required Skills

  • At least Bachelor’s degree in Business Studies (BBS) from a recognized university with 3-5 years’ experience in DRRM projects or in relevant area. Or Master’s Degree in Business Studies (MBS) from recognized university with at least 1year experience.

  • Strong knowledge of DRRM, Climate Change, Child and women’s rights and gender justice, advanced understanding of the development and NGO sector.

  • Experience in reporting to donors in an NGO environment.

  • Experience of working with coalitions and networks.

  • Excellent Finance report writing, data management, documentation and presentation.

  • Excellent computer skills including Word, Excel and Power-point and accounting  software  Tally , etc. 

  • Experience of working closely with government health sector and priority programs.

  • Possessed effective skills to facilitate trainings, seminars and various orientation activities.

  • Good spoken and written English and Nepali languages.

  • Experience of office management, staff management, basic finance management and procurement management

  • Self- motivated and capable of managing work independently

  • Multi-tasking and ability to organize several tasks to meet deadlines 

  • Good understanding of the laws of Nepal related to tax, insurance, etc.

Call for the application of “DRRM Fellowship 2023”

 

Institute of Himalayan Risk Reduction (IHRR) with the support from the DCA Nepal invites applications from Nepali students for a six months long DRRM Fellowship. This fellowship is exclusively a Masters' Thesis Research Grant. 

IHRR provides research grants to students from different Nepalese universities on a competitive basis to enhance the young researchers’ skills and capacity and help them produce good quality research. 

Students from Disaster Risk Management, Civil/Environmental Engineering, Geosciences, Hydrology/Meteorology and other disciplines willing to work on Impact-based flood forecasting models for effective anticipatory action can submit a 2 pager concept paper by December 19, 2022. 

 

MSc Thesis Grant 

Number of Grants: 2

Amount of each Grant: Rs.50,000 

 

Grant Scope 

The research award is looking for visionary proposals that will contribute to promote innovation and science based decision making for flood early warning systems and early action. The proposed concept must be bold, innovative, and transformable, and must have the potential to impact on flood risk assessment.

 

Duration of the Grant 

The running time for the research project is normally 6 months. All successful applicants must complete their project within 6 months after signing the grant agreement. 


 

Eligibility Criteria: 

  • Students must be affiliated to the universities of Nepal.

  • Two-page concept note about the Flood Forecasting for Anticipatory Actions with a strong interest, and the transcript of Bachelor’s and marksheet of M.Sc. first semester (both merit and interest-based selection). 

  • Recommendation letter from the respective university/program coordinator/thesis supervisor.

  • Should be willing to work under the supervision of DCA/IHRR professionals related to the topics. 

  • Should be willing to carry out fieldwork for data collection 

  • Submission of one research manuscript is compulsory after the study.
